| Since there is an American naval base in Sasebo, there are often English speaking staff in hotels and eating establishments, and there has also been an increase in Chinese and Korean speaking staff in recent years who can look after tourist from China and Korea. Nonetheless, most residents of Sasebo cannot understand English. However, simple directions and information on facilities can surely be dealt with using body language. |

JRThe Tourist Information Center is located in the premises of JR Sasebo Station. The hours of business are between 9:00 and 18:00 seven days a week, and Japanese and English are spoken. They will kindly provide you with information on tourist attractions, accommodations, eating establishments and transportation access to destinations.

| Money can be converted into Japanese Yen at banks indicated with the Authorized Money Changer sign. The Eighteenth Bank Sasebo Station Branch is the bank nearest to Sasebo Station (2 min. walk) that provides a foreign exchange service. |

Traveler's Check can be used in major banks, hotels and shops in principal cities. Credit cards from internationally known companies can usually be used as well. However, since there are quite a few places in Sasebo that do not accept traveler's checks and credit cards, be sure to have some cash prepared.

| Most ATMs do not accept credit or debit cards issued abroad. However, there are ATMs in post offices that provide cash dispensing service for credit cards issued abroad. Such ATM will have a sign that reads "International ATM Service" and a sticker with logos for VISA, VISA Electron, PLUS, MASTERCARD, Maestro, Cirrus, American Express, Diners Club International and JCG. |

| There are only a few public establishments that provide free internet access in Sasebo. But there are many hotels in the city that provide internet access with free internet terminals in lobbies and guest rooms. Enquire in advance for information. |

In an emergency such as sudden illness, theft or accident, notify the fire department or the police by phone. Emergency calls can be made by dialing the same three digit numbers without an area code throughout Japan. When calling from a public phone, press the red emergency button on the front of the phone before dialing the number.
