The Sasebo Morning Market packed full of fresh seasonal cooking ingredients is held under the covered parking lot in Yorozu-cho by the port from 3 till 8 in the morning. Besides fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, dried goods and fresh flowers, various things from clothes to sweets and pottery are sold at 20 to 30% off retail prices.
 |
This market is also popular for its Auction where the customer is the lead player. It is held on the 2nd and 4th Saturday each month and anyone is free to participate. Fish, vegetables and rice are auctioned, and the customer who bids the highest price can buy the item. It becomes busy with many shoppers, since items can be purchased for prices cheaper than the going rates in the market. Although some fresh foods cannot be taken out of Japan, you can still enjoy shopping for pottery and clothes. |
Besides shopping, annual events include the Chibikko Suikawari Taikai (Children's Watermelon Cracking Competition) on July 20th, and the Zenzai-kai on January 10th where Zenzai (sweet red bean soup with pieces of rice cake) and sake from the casket is offered to about 2,000 visitors from 6 in the morning.
