| Most of the hotels in Sasebo are orthodox ones with fixed beds, but there are some Japanese style Ryokans (Inns). |
Check in at the front desk. There are often English speaking staff at the front desk so ask for assistance if you have any questions. The accommodation can be paid for with cash or credit card. Most cards that are used worldwide are accepted, but you must check in advance.
Since there is no custom of tipping in Japan, you will not need to prepare tips. However, you can express your appreciation to the staff in charge of your room at a Ryokan by giving a small amount of cash in an envelope or wrapped in tissue on your way out. |
| If the accommodation includes meals, the breakfast and dinner will usually be provided in the hotel restaurant. In a Ryokan, meals are either brought to your room or provided in a large banquet room. Check the meal times when you check in. Notify of any foods you cannot eat and ask if alternatives can be provided. If you wish to enjoy a meal outside the front staff will be more than happy to give you information on popular local establishments. |
| Most rooms have an en suite bath. However, Ryokans have a common bathroom called Daiyokujo (Big common tub.) There are some rules you must observe. Wash your body before soaking in the bathtub and do not put towels or soap in the tub. |
| A Ryokan room has futon as bedding. The staff in charge of your room will prepare your futon while you are having your meal or taking a bath so there is not need for you to do anything. The bedding can be left as-is in the morning too. At a Ryokan, you can wear the Yukata provided in your room. You can take it to the common bathtub as change or clothes and it is also fine to walk around the Ryokan in Yukata after a bath. |
| Drinks provided in the refrigerator in the rooms are basically charged. With a computerized refrigerator, items may be billed once they are pulled out. If you did not consume the item, ask the front desk staff to confirm. |
